Go Gnome Hunting in Gariwerd: The Trail That Turns a Walk Into a Game
Someone has been hiding gnomes in the Grampians. Dozens of them, tucked into trails, sitting on rocks, propped against tree roots across Gariwerd.
The Gnome Homes trail is a community-run summer activity that started small and has quietly become one of the most talked-about things to do in Halls Gap β especially if you’re travelling with kids, or if you just find the idea of a gnome sitting in a national park genuinely delightful.
How It Works
Download the map from the Halls Gap visitor centre or pick one up in town. The gnomes are hidden at various locations across the main trails around Halls Gap β some easy to spot, others requiring a sharper eye. Each one is numbered and named.
There’s no prize at the end, just the satisfaction of finding them. Though the photos tend to be excellent.
Worth Doing
It turns a familiar walk into a slightly absurd treasure hunt. Kids who might otherwise resist a two-hour bush walk become extremely motivated when there’s a ceramic gnome to find around the next corner.
The gnomes are usually in place through the warmer months. Availability and locations can shift between seasons, so check with the visitor centre when you arrive. The Nook can point you in the right direction.
