While the Grampians (Gariwerd) is famous for its rugged peaks and sweeping views, it also hides some truly restorative water spots. Whether you’re looking for a sandy beach to soak up the sun or a quiet reservoir for a morning kayak, there is a body of water for every mood.
To help you plan your summer escape, we’ve rounded up our favourite lakes and water holes near the Nook.
Important Note: Some of our local lakes are primary water supplies for the region. To keep our water clean and safe, swimming is strictly prohibited in certain areas. Please check signage on-site and respect these local regulations.
1. Lake Fyans (10 min drive)

Lake Fyans is the “local’s choice” for a summer dip. With its shallow, clear waters and stretches of sandy beach, it feels more like a coastal escape than a mountain lake. It’s perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or a quiet lakeside picnic.
Best for: Swimming, families and sunset views.

2. Venus Baths (Halls Gap)

Located just a short walk from the centre of Halls Gap, Venus Baths features natural rock pools carved into the sandstone. After a bit of rain, these pools fill up, creating the perfect place to dip your feet or enjoy a refreshing rock-pool soak.
Best for: A quick, scenic dip near town.

3. Fish Falls (30 min drive + hike)

If you prefer a natural “wild swimming” experience, head to Fish Falls. Accessed via a beautiful 5km return walk from the Zumsteins Picnic Area, these falls drop into a deep, cool pool. It’s a rewarding spot to wash off the dust after a hike.
Best for: Nature lovers and hikers looking for a reward.

4. Lake Lonsdale (20 min drive)

When water levels are high, Lake Lonsdale is a vast and beautiful spot for a swim or a boat trip. It has a rugged, “bush” feel and is often much quieter than Lake Fyans.
Best for: Those looking for a bit more solitude.

5. Lake Bellfield

Just minutes from Halls Gap, Lake Bellfield offers iconic views of the Mt William Range. While you cannot swim here, the walking track along the wall is a must-do for sunset, and the picnic areas are beautifully maintained.
Activity: Picnics and sunset walks.

6. Lake Wartook

High in the Mackenzie River catchment, Lake Wartook is one of the most stunning vistas in the park. While swimming is not permitted (as it’s a major water supply), it is a world-class spot for trout fishing and kayaking. The reflection of the mountains on the still morning water is a photographer’s dream.
Activity: Kayaking, fishing, photography.

7. Moora Moora Reservoir

A hidden gem located in the valley behind the Victoria Range. Moora Moora is peaceful, surrounded by forest and teeming with birdlife. Like Wartook, swimming is prohibited, but it is an exceptional place for a quiet paddle or to watch the kangaroos at dusk.
Activity: Birdwatching, canoeing, tranquility.

If you don’t have your own gear or want to experience these waters with an expert, we highly recommend getting in touch with our friends at Absolute Outdoors in Halls Gap. They offer fantastic guided kayaking tours on Lake Wartook and Lake Bellfield, as well as equipment hire for those looking to explore at their own pace. It’s a brilliant way to see the Grampians from a completely different perspective.
