There’s a version of Gariwerd most people never see. It arrives between May and September, settles in quietly, and stays for months. The visitors thin out. The trails open up. The mornings get cold and bright and worth waking up for.
The off-season here isn’t a compromise. It’s a different trip.
The obvious thing is the space. Trails that run single file in January open right up in June. Mackenzie Falls without a queue. The Pinnacle in the mist, just you and the wind. Popular spots become peaceful ones, and the lesser-known waterfalls that barely trickle in summer start flowing properly after the winter rains — which is reason enough to come.
The less obvious thing is the wildlife. Cooler temperatures bring kangaroos, wallabies, and emus out earlier and closer. The birdlife — always remarkable in Gariwerd — seems more present, more audible. There’s more time to notice things when the path isn’t crowded.
The wine country comes into its own in winter. Grampians Shiraz, with its dark fruit and warm finish, earns its reputation in a cold-weather cellar door with the winemaker there to pour it. Take your time with it.
Brambuk Cultural Centre in Halls Gap deserves a proper visit — not a passing stop. The rock art sites and the Djab wurrung and Jardwadjali stories they carry deserve the same unhurried attention the landscape does.
Stargazing from the Nook’s outdoor area is something else entirely in winter. Longer nights, less atmospheric interference, and a sky that earns every cliché ever written about it. Bring a blanket out.
After a day in all of that, the Nook is ready for you. The outdoor bath is best in cold air — something about the contrast that makes it feel like a proper reward. Light the fire, open something from the Grampians Wine Cellar, and let the evening close in at its own pace.
The off-season asks very little. Come and give it that.
We acknowledge that Nook On The Hill sits on Djab Wurrung country and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.
