There’s a sourdough culture in your hamper that has been alive considerably longer than your booking. It crossed Australia in a car, ended up in Pomonal, and became the foundation of a bakery that we’d back against most of what’s available in any city.
Blue Wren Bakery is Nick and Jackie’s project. It’s been part of ours — in a smaller way — since we started the Nook.

Nick and Jackie took a road trip across Australia that turned into something more like a calling. Along the way they met bakers, farmers, millers — people who took the simple things seriously and did them well. They arrived in the Grampians in 2019 with a sourdough culture nurtured throughout their travels and a plan for a micro bakery.
The plan held. Blue Wren is small by design and uncompromising for the same reason. Small-batch, locally sourced, naturally leavened. “Making simple things but doing it well” — their words, and an honest summary.

The sourdough is the centrepiece — a crust that gives with a proper crack, an interior that’s soft and faintly tangy, the kind of loaf you pull apart rather than slice. The crackers are made for the local cheese that shares the hamper, crisp and subtle enough not to compete.
Depending on the season, you might find a fruit-filled pastry tucked in as well — Blue Wren’s version of a sweet thing done properly. The pickles round out a cheese board in exactly the way pickles should.

Blue Wren operates out of Pomonal. If you’d like to meet the people behind what’s in the hamper, it’s a short drive worth taking. Pick up an extra loaf for the road home.

Good bread makes a morning. Enjoy yours.
