Most mornings at the Nook, the kangaroos are already on the grass by the time the coffee is ready. Eastern Greys, usually — a mob of them, grazing unhurriedly at the foot of the hill, entirely indifferent to the humans watching from the deck.
For international visitors, this tends to stop them cold. After years of zoos and tour buses and “there might be one near the road if you’re lucky”, stepping onto a private deck in your pyjamas and finding a dozen kangaroos ten metres away is a different kind of thing entirely.

Kangaroos and wallabies are the most reliable presence — the mob at the lower slope is a near-daily occurrence. Emus wander through less predictably but more dramatically. Echidnas move through the native garden at their own pace. Kookaburras announce dusk reliably enough that guests start listening for them.
The birdlife in the garden is worth paying attention to on its own — wrens, honeyeaters, bronzewings, the occasional wedge-tailed eagle working the updrafts above the ridge.

None of this is arranged. The wildlife at the Nook is exactly that — wild, unconfined, going about its business in a landscape that the native garden has made more hospitable over time. We don’t feed or approach the animals, and ask guests to do the same. The experience is better for it.
Australia is full of wildlife experiences that require travelling to find them. This one happens right outside your door. Book your stay.
