You can see Chautauqua Peak from the main street of Halls Gap. That ridge line sitting above the rooftops — that’s where you’re headed.
The loop is 5.5 kilometres. It starts from the tennis courts at the southern end of town, which means you can walk straight from the Nook without touching the car.

We always recommend starting anti-clockwise — through the Botanic Gardens and up the gentler western slope. Save the steeper descent for the way back when your legs are warm and the views behind you make every step worth it.
The Botanic Gardens section is genuinely beautiful in the early morning. Native plants, quiet trails, the odd wallaby moving through the scrub. It eases you in before the real climbing begins.

The summit opens out onto bare rock with a 360-degree outlook across the Grampians valley. Halls Gap looks tiny below. The sandstone ranges stretch out in every direction.
This is the kind of view that makes you want to sit for a while. Bring something to eat. You’ve earned it.

Allow around two hours at a comfortable pace. Wear proper footwear — the descent has loose rock in sections. Start early in summer; the exposed sections get warm fast.

One of the most satisfying short hikes in Gariwerd. And you can be back at the Nook for a second coffee before 10am.
