Short Walk, Big Reward: Clematis Falls
Not every walk in Gariwerd needs to be an expedition. Clematis Falls proves that.
It’s a one-kilometre out-and-back from the Halls Gap Recreation Reserve β flat, shaded, and quiet. Twenty minutes each way. You could do it before breakfast and still make it back for eggs.
The Walk
The trail follows a creek through a eucalypt corridor before the falls come into view. It’s sheltered and cool even on warm days. The kind of walk where you stop talking and just listen for a bit.
Keep an eye out along the path β a mob of kangaroos has made this area home. They’re used to people moving through and usually don’t bother to shift. Just give them space.
After Rain Is Best
Like most waterfalls in the Grampians, Clematis Falls is at its best a day or two after good rainfall. The flow is fuller, the air smells of wet earth and bark, and the whole place feels alive in a way that photographs can’t quite catch.
If it’s been dry, the falls may just be a trickle β still beautiful, but worth timing your visit if you can.
Getting There
Park at the Halls Gap Recreation Reserve on Grampians Road. The trailhead is well-signed. No fees, no bookings. Bring water anyway β it’s the Grampians.
A perfect first walk if you’ve just arrived and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full-day hike.
