Mackenzie Falls is the kind of place that earns the drive.
At about 45 minutes from the Nook, it’s the furthest north we regularly send guests — but nobody has ever come back saying it wasn’t worth it. It’s the largest waterfall in Victoria, and when it’s running well, the sound reaches you before you can see it.

The trail descends from the car park through a steep-sided gorge — around 900 steps down to the base. It’s one-way on the main route, so you’ll loop back up via the Broken Falls track. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the full circuit.
The base of the falls is spectacular. The water drops into a dark pool surrounded by fern-covered rock walls. In summer it’s cool and green. After heavy rain it’s thunderous.

The steps are well-maintained but steep — take your time on the descent. Wear closed-toe shoes and carry water. The car park fills early on weekends; aim for before 9am if you can.
Combine it with a stop at Zumsteins picnic area on the way back — flat, grassy, and usually full of kangaroos who’ve lost all interest in being photographed.
